Ford Kuga Remap – Stg1 – Hucknall

This poor Ford Kuga has had a few issues ongoing, the owner mentioned this when booking in for the remap, but before any remap can take place it needs to be running well.

The problem we have is getting all the facts from the start, this is needed to form some sort of picture before we even get into doing anything, so the owner explained that it had, had a new clutch fitted some months ago by a local garage, it then had to go back to the garage as they had left a fuel pipe loose, letting diesel fuel escape over the rear of the engine, it also had other issues in that the start/stop didn’t work, the engine was in limp mode and had been for some time and the tyre pressure monitor was constantly flashing. So a full scan with Autel’s latest 808 machine discovered 6 faults in the engine ECU, 5 faults in BCM (body control module) and 3 or 4 other faults in various ‘non important’ ECU’s.

So looking on live data there was definitely something wrong with the charging cycle, plus the MAF was giving no signal at all, this caused all sorts of engine codes. Open the hood and a quick look around, i noticed the MAF not even plugged in! Problem one solved!

Then the owner stated that he recently had a new battery fitted at Halfrauds, i asked if they had used diagnostics to tell the car that it had a new battery and he said not.

So again the Autel can do this, problem number 2 sorted! At this point most the P codes stored in the ECU could be cleared, no more engine light on and no more ‘limp’ mode.

Next was the DPF, it was full! The DPF regen cycle will not work as it should while there are codes in the ECU, it’s a safety feature, so we forced a static regen and watched, standing at the rear of the car it’s obvious if it’s working or not, the smell and the heat coming from the exhaust is unmistakable!

I did this for about 15 minutes and then checked again on live data to see what content was in the DPF, 15 mins of running had halved the saturation and soot level, so we fired it up again and gave it another 15 mins regen time.

Once complete ‘hey presto’ and lucky for the owner we were back down to virtually nothing. So on with the remap, this version was a Delphi 6.1 as apposed to the 3.5 in the earlier version of the Kuga, we have done these so many times before it’s a fairly quick process, so the 150hp has now risen to 190+hp (the last one we did dyno’d at 198hp / 440nm) now this engine was back to good health i see no reason why it shouldn’t produce the same, plus the previous one of these the owner reported 6mpg better even around town!
